Say the word â€Å"hero.† What is the first thing that comes to mind when one hears the word hero? Some may visualize Superman flying through the sky saving a young child, while hero for others may be a more realistic image of a soldier or police officer appearing at the time of need to save someone from danger. Still, others might think about Jesus Christ as a hero for his act of dying on the cross to save people from sin and death. Is a hero defined by the number of sacrifices he has made to the benefit of the society? Why are only certain people heroes? We all know what a hero is, but how would you define a hero? Heroism is an attribute celebrated in varied ways. Evidently, heroes are all around us, from Jesus Christ to everyday people. However, what qualifies a person as a hero is listening for the call to adventure, accepting the challenge, and then, be willing to do it all over again in order to assist humanity by conquering fear and facing problems. As noted earlier, a hero represents various connotations. Joseph Campbell would describe Jesus, Superman, and soldiers are all variants of the same hero. In the book, â€Å"The Hero of a Thousand Faces,† Campbell discusses many stories of ancient myths and explains that all heroes follow the same path of action during their quest. Campbell defines the hero’s sojourn as a cycle with the same key events.
